Creating Space for Knowledge in Organizations

This location is shown only to members

Our speaker this evening will be discussing the main reasons or motives for the adoption of
KM and what organizational conditions it takes to adopt KM.

These motives include:

  • Lack of practices to protect and share information and knowledge, leading the organisation to a constant reinvention of the wheel and continuous duplication of efforts;
  • Problems with data/information collection, treatment, organisation and dissemination, indicating lack of strategic information management;
  • Recognition that both information and knowledge are the mains factors of competitiveness of modern times;
  • Need for the creation of an organisational space for knowledge, also known as “Ba” or “enabling conditions”, vis-à-vis the need to address cultural and behavioural issues.

Speaker: Rivadávia (Riva) C. Drummond de Alvarenga Neto
Rivadávia speaks regularly on the subject of knowledge management and he conducted the first in depth qualitative study within the Brazilian organizational context in 2005. Since 2001 he's been working with many international firms, such as Petrobras, Embrapa, ONS, Astra Zeneca, Linde, ABN Amro Bank, Anglo American, among others. The results of this study will be presented and discussed along with case studies conducted in the last 8 years of research.

Martin and I (Stephanie) heard Riva speak at U of T's Faculty of Information Studies in April, he has some interesting and new/different findings on what it takes to make Knowledge Management successful in an organization, so we wanted to bring him to KWT to share this information with our members.

Please note, we have to incur some costs for this Meetup, so we are passing the costs on to participants; you must pay to RSVP. There will be a cash bar and some hors d'œuvres available, but no menu to order from.

    Dr. Riva Neto (full name Rivadavia C. Drummond de Alvarenga Neto) is a professor at Brazil's FDC business school. His presentation on knowledge spaces (called Ba in Japanese) was thoroughly enjoyable and thought-provoking. The assumptions we make about knowledge management -- even the basic definitions of the terms -- are called into question, picked at, and then rebuilt using a very appealing model that bridges between our usual concept of strategy and the tools used at the operational level.
