Seth Earley, speaking on Taxonomy and Knowledge Management

This location is shown only to members

USING TAXONOMIES TO IMPROVE SEARCH

Taxonomy is a core organizing principle of a content management application and related search tools. There are numerous ways to influence search recall and precision by using thesaurus structures and taxonomies. Even search appliances can leverage taxonomies. Integrated search applications can maintain context of federated search using taxonomies.
This session covers a variety of ways that you can integrate and fully leverage large public taxonomies as well as apply small controlled vocabularies in search applications and search systems. It discusses examples of advanced and innovative integrated search environments that leverage metadata and taxonomies with various classes of search tools.

I think the talk was informative and interesting.

He was knowledgeable, entertaining and engaging. There was too much content to cover in such a short period of time so at times it felt rushed.

I still don't have a good grasp of what the semantic web is. It was good to have someone define what different search strategies can do, what happens in navigation, and thoughts on making the search experience as successful as possible. I came to the conclusion last evening throughout Seth's talk that the one thing that is missing from the modern search scenario of people using technology to do it for themselves is the good old fashioned reference interview, which establishes context fairly quickly. As good as technology gets, the absence of that initial human chat to best understand the needs of the client still leaves us at a disadvantage. Will we see this significant gap addressed soon - it remains to be seen, even in the context of rapid technology advances. It all comes down to how good search results are for the client. Great evening, good presentation, however tightened up with fewer slides would have improved the event.

Seth made a good case for using taxonomy with search. Great presentation and a lot of food for thought. He went through the slides pretty fast, so it would be great if they could be made available online. Thanks.

I have seen him speak several times before. He is always interesting.
